Hard-to-market performers love company, and Marlene Ricci isn't so
lonely now that she has Ray Brown Jr. to share the pain of the
Riviera's Le Bistro Theatre.
Ricci leased the lounge from the faded hotel early last year with the
intention of being resident cabaret headliner. Instead, she has
become more of a landlord, doing three shows per week after learning
that high-concept acts such as hypnotists and Neil Diamond
impersonators are easier "sells" than those without an obvious
gimmick. But her latest roommate is Brown.
And his only gimmick is his parentage, a hook he didn't even mention,
let alone exploit, in a recent show. His father was jazz bassist Ray
Brown, and his stepmother was Ella Fitzgerald, who raised him from
age 1.
